It has been a fun week. On top of being very relieved and happy with the outcome of the Presidential Election, I got to pick out my materials for http://www.sjquiltmuseum.org/index.htmlDiscarded to Divine and help hang the some pieces for San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, High Fiber Under Five.
If you haven't heard of Discarded to Divine, it is an annual fundraiser for the St. Vincent de Paul Society, where designers take clothing/fabric/material that the St. Vincent de Paul Society can't use and would normally have to throw out and transform the discards into couture, one of a kind garments. The garments then get auctioned off to the highest bidder. I have wanted to participate ever since they started it in 2006, but the timing has always been bad for me. So this year I am going to do it. Tuesday, I went to the St. Vincent de Paul Society Help Desk, with a couple of friends to choose our materials we will use for our creations. We didn't know what to expect but had a good time digging through boxes and rifling around racks to find items that would strike our creative juices.
This is what I came home with:
The bottom bright green fabric (which is a 1960's gown) is going to be the main fabric for my garment, the rest I grabbed because I liked them or they complimented the bright green in some way. I haven't figured out my design yet and wanted to cover my bases. Only 50% of the finished garment needs to be made from the discarded material, so who knows what I will end up with.
Wednesday I got to help hang some of the 200+ pieces for the San Jose Quilt and Textile Museum fundraiser High Fiber Under Five. It is a one night only event that will take place tomorrow night at the museum from 6-11pm. There are some really great pieces and everything is under $500. If you are in the area come on by and check it out. If you want to say hi, I will be behind the cash register in the main gallery.
Here we are finishing up some last minute painting in the lobby and making sure the pieces are placed in just the right spot in the hallway.
